Joseph H. Ballew

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph H. Ballew (born August 30, 1886 - March 8, 1972 ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1945 he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even if this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Nothing is known about Joseph Ballew's youth and schooling. There is also no information about his career outside of politics. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1943 he was a member of the Tennessee Senate. After the death of Senate President Blan R. Maxwell , who was killed in a plane crash, Ballew succeeded him. He held this office between October 1943 and January 1945. In this capacity he was Deputy Governor Prentice Cooper . With that he actually held the office of lieutenant governor. This post was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. After that, Ballew no longer appeared politically. He died in 1972.
