Lucius D. Hill
Lucius D. Hill (* 1856 ; † 1933 ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1927, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even if this office was not formally introduced until 1951.
Career
Lucius Hill attended private schools and then Burritt College in Spencer . He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1881. He then practiced in this profession. At times he also served as a judge. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1886 and 1890 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee ; from 1923 to 1927 he was a member of the State Senate, of which he had been President since 1925. Between 1917 and 1921 he worked for the federal government as a commissioner for border issues with Mexico .
In 1925, Hill was deputy to Governor Austin Peay as President of the State Senate . He thus actually held the office of lieutenant governor. This post was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. Lucius Hill died in 1933.
