George H. Morgan

George Hampton Morgan (born September 5, 1841 - † July 27, 1900 ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even though this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Career

George Morgan served in the Union Army during the Civil War . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. In the meantime he was a prosecutor in the fifth judicial district. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He became a member of the Tennessee Senate and its President.

In 1881, Morgan was deputy to Governor Alvin Hawkins as President of the State Senate . With this he actually held the post of lieutenant governor. This office was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. Morgan was also a Freemason . He died on July 27, 1900.
