Overton County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Livingston .
geography
The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Tennessee, is about 15 miles north of Kentucky , and covers an area of 1,126 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pickett County , Fentress County , Putnam County , Jackson County, and Clay Counties .
history
Overton County was formed on September 11, 1806 from parts of Jackson County. It was named after John Overton , a co-founder of Memphis , Tennessee and a Tennessee Supreme Court Justice .

According to the 2000 census , Overton County had 20,118 people in 8,110 households and 5,920 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.59 percent white, 0.28 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.49 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.69 percent of the population.
Of the 8,110 households, 29.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, and 27.0 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent were single households and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average household size was 2.90 people.
23.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44, 25.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.0 percent were older than 65. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.1 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,915 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,156. Males had a median income of $ 25,287 versus $ 19,674 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,910. 12.3 percent of families and 16.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
