Lawrence County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Lawrenceburg .

The county is located in southern Tennessee, bordering Alabama and has an area of 1,600 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lewis County , Maury County , Giles County , Lauderdale County, Alabama, and Wayne County .
history
Lawrence County was formed on October 21, 1817 from parts of Hickman County and Maury County. It was named after James Lawrence , a naval officer who became famous with the order: “Don't give up the ship” in the British-American War of 1812 after he was fatally wounded.
Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 18, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 39,926 people in 15,480 households and 11,362 families in Lawrence County. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.83 percent white, 1.47 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.00 percent of the population.
Of the 15,480 households, 33.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers, and 26.6 percent were non-families. 23.7 percent were single households and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average household size was 3.02.
26.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,498 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,326. Males had a median income of $ 27,742 versus $ 20,928 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,848. 10.7 percent of families and 14.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
