Lauderdale County was formed on November 24, 1835 from parts of Dyer County, Haywood County and Tipton County. It was named after James Lauderdale (1780-1814), an officer who served under Andrew Jackson and was killed in the British-American War .
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , Fort Pillow . Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 18, 2018).
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Lauderdale Counties had 27,815 people in 9,365 households. The population density was 22.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.66 people lived in the 9,365 households.
The racial the population was composed of 63.0 percent white, 34.9 percent African American, 0.7 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.1 percent of the population.
23.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 63.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 12.7 percent were 65 years or older. 47.5 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 32,894 USD . The per capita income was $ 16,006. 24.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
