DeKalb County is a county in the US state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Smithville .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Tennessee and has an area of ​​852 square kilometers, of which 63 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Putnam County , White County , Warren County , Cannon County , Wilson County, and Smith County .

history

DeKalb County was formed on December 11, 1837 from parts of Cannon, Jackson, Warren, White and Wilson Counties. It was named after Johann DeKalb , a German-American major general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .

The Alexandria Cemeteries Historic District is one of the county's five entries on the NRHP.

Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 13, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , DeKalb County had 17,423 people in 6,984 households and 4,986 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.58 percent white, 1.43 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.62 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.63 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,359 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,920. Males had a median income of $ 29,483 versus $ 20,953 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,217. 11.8 percent of families and 17.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
