Cocke County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Newport .

The county is located in eastern Tennessee, bordering North Carolina and has an area of 1,148 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hamblen County , Greene County , Madison County, North Carolina, Haywood County, North Carolina, Sevier County, and Jefferson County .
history
Cocke County was formed on October 9, 1797 from parts of Jefferson County. It was named after William Cocke , a well-known politician in Virginia , North Carolina , Tennessee, and the Northwest Territory .
Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 11, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Cocke County had 33,565 people in 13,762 households and 9,715 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.16 percent white, 1.99 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.32 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.96 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.05 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,762 households, 29.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.1 percent were married couples living together, 13.0 percent were single mothers, and 29.4 percent were non-families. 25.7 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average household size was 2.87 people.
22.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44, 26.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.6 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,553 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,418. Males had a median income of $ 26,062 versus $ 18,826 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,881. 18.7 percent of families and 22.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
