The county is located in northwest Tennessee on the western bank of the Tennessee River dammed up to Kentucky Lake . It borders Kentucky to the north and has an area of 1,537 square kilometers, of which 82 square kilometers are water surface. The following neighboring counties border Henry County:

P. Henry

Henry County was formed from Chickasaw Land on November 7, 1821 . It was named after Patrick Henry (1736–1799), a prominent representative of the American independence movement .

The Mt. Zion Church and Cemetery is one of the county's 15 entries in the NRHP.
