Hickman County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Centerville .

geography

The county is west of the geographic center of Tennessee and covers an area of 1,587 square kilometers with no significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Dickson County , Williamson County , Maury County , Lewis County , Perry County, and Humphreys County .

history

Hickman County was formed on December 3, 1807 from parts of Dickson County. It was named after Edwin Hickman (? –1785), an officer in the American Revolutionary War , who was killed by Indians while surveying the Duck River .

The James Buchanan Walker House is one of the county's nine entries in the NRHP.

Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 17, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Hickman County had 22,295 people in 8,081 households and 5,955 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.71 percent white, 4.53 percent African American, 0.48 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.29 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.00 percent of the population.

Of the 8,081 households, 33.9 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.6 percent were single mothers, and 26.3 percent were non-families. 22.6 percent were single households and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average household size was 3.02.

24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24, 31.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.0 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 36 years. Statistically, there were 112.5 males for every 100 females and 111.5 males for every 100 females aged 18 and over.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,013 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,342. Males had a median income of $ 29,411 versus $ 21,185 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,446. 11.6 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
