McMinn County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Athens .

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Tennessee, about 25 miles to the east from North Carolina , about 45 km to the south from Georgia , and covers an area of 1,119 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Roane County , Loudon County , Monroe County , Polk County , Bradley County, and Meigs County .

history

McMinn County was formed from Cherokee Land on November 13, 1819. It was named after Joseph McMinn , a member of the Constituent Assembly (Constitutional Convention) of Tennessee and later governor .

During the so-called Battle of Athens , war returnees called for an end to longstanding corruption and election fraud in McMinn County, which resulted in a skirmish between the sheriffs and former soldiers during the August 1, 1946 elections.

The Alexander H. Keith House is one of 18 entries for the county in the NRHP.

According to the 2000 census , McMinn County's 49,015 people lived in 19,721 households and 14,317 families. The population density was 44 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.72 percent white, 4.48 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.70 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.75 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.06 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.80 percent of the population.

Of the 19,721 households, 31.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers, and 27.4 percent were non-families. 24.4 percent were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average household size was 2.90 people.

23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.3 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,919 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,992. Males had a median income of $ 31,051 versus $ 20,524 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,725. 10.9 percent of families and 14.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
