Marshall County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Lewisburg .

geography

The county is located just south of the geographic center of Tennessee, about 45 km south of Alabama , and covers 974 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Rutherford County , Bedford County , Lincoln County , Giles County , Maury County, and Williamson Counties .

history

Marshall County was formed on February 20, 1836 from parts of Bedford County, Lincoln County, and Maury County. It was named after John Marshall , a presiding judge at the Supreme Court of the United States ( Supreme Court of the United States ).

The Belfast Railroad Depot is one of 19 entries for the county in the NRHP.

According to the 2000 census , Marshall County had 26,767 people in 10,307 households and 7,472 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.42 percent white, 7.77 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.46 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.77 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.87 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 10,307 households, 33.8 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers, and 27.5 percent were non-families. 23.9 percent were single households and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average household size was 3.02.

25.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.6 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.9 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,457 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,731. Males had a median income of $ 31,876 versus $ 22,362 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,749. 7.3 percent of families and 10.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
