history

White County was formed on September 11, 1806 from parts of Smith County. It is controversial who the county was named after. The official records state that it has been named after John White (1751-1846), the first settler in the area from Europe, who immigrated to the Cumberland Mountains with his family from Virginia in 1789 . Some historians instead state that the county was named after General James White , who fought in the Revolutionary War and was the founder of Knoxville . Aiken and Kane give in The American Counties: Origins of County Names, Dates of Creation, Area, and Population Data, 1950-2010 only John White as the namesake.

The Sparta Electric Building is one of the county's eleven entries in the NRHP.

Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 14, 2018).
