Putnam County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Cookeville .

The county is northeast of the geographic center of Tennessee, about 75 km to the north from Kentucky , and covers an area of 1,043 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Overton County , Cumberland County , White County , DeKalb County , Smith County, and Jackson County .

history
Putnam County was formed on February 2, 1842 from parts of DeKalb, Jackson, Overton, Smith, and White Counties. In March 1844, the county was dissolved again and on 11th 1854 created again. It was named after Israel Putnam , an American war hero like Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone , general in the American War of Independence , who participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill .

According to the 2000 census , Putnam County had 62,315 people in 24,865 households and 16,410 families. The population density was 60 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.52 percent white, 1.71 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.93 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.03 percent of the population.
Of the 24,865 households, 29.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 52.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers, and 34.0 percent were non-families. 27.1 percent were single households and 9.6 percent had people aged 65 or over.
22.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 14.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 96.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,914 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,553. Males had a median income of $ 29,243 versus $ 21,001 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,927. 10.3 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
