Smith County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Carthage .

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Tennessee, is about 50 km to the north from Kentucky and has an area of 843 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Macon County , Jackson County , Putnam County , DeKalb County , Wilson County, and Trousdale County .

history
Smith County was formed on October 26, 1799 from parts of Sumner County. It was named after Daniel Smith , an American surveyor, colonel in the American Revolutionary War, and two-time Senator from Tennessee.
Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 4, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Smith County had 17,712 people in 6,878 households and 5,069 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.42 percent white, 2.53 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.59 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.13 percent of the population.
Of the 6,878 households, 34.1 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 60.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers, and 26.3 percent were non-families. 23.4 percent were single households and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average household size was 3.00 people.
25.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.4 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 37 years. Statistically, there were 97.0 males for every 100 females and 92.4 males for every 100 females aged 18 and over.
The median income for a household in the 35,625 USD , and the median income for a family was 41,645 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,853 versus $ 22,133 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,473. 10.3 percent of families and 12.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
