geography
The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Tennessee on both sides of the Cumberland River and on the east bank of the Tennessee River, which is dammed up to Kentucky Lake . Stewart County was formed on November 1, 1803 from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after Duncan Stewart (1763-1819), the first lieutenant governor of the state of Mississippi (1817-1819) and a member of the Senate of Tennessee (1801-1807).
15 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 4, 2018), including the Fort Donelson National Battlefield .
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Stewart County had 13,324 people in 5,383 households. The population density was 11.2 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.44 people lived in each of the 5383 households.
The racial the population was composed of 94.8 percent white, 1.8 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 1.1 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.1 percent of the population.
22.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.0 percent were 65 years or older. 50.2 percent of the population was female.
