Dover is a city in Stewart County of the US state Tennessee , about 108 km west-northwest of Nashville on the Cumberland River . In 2000 the city had 1,442 inhabitants. Dover is the county seat of Stewart County and part of the Clarksville Metropolitan Area .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Dover was inhabited by 1,442 people. The population density was 146.5 people per km ². There were 656 housing units at an average of 66.7 per km ². The population consisted of Dover to 94.73% of White , 3.05% Black or African American , 0.69% Native American , 0.07% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.55% said other races to belong and 0.90% named two or more races. 0.83% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Dover were distributed to 608 households out of which 23.0% were living in children under 18 years. 49.3% of households were married, 7.2% had a female head of the household without a husband, and 38.5% were not families. 36.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 21.7% of all households aged 65 years or older. In the city is part of the Fort Donelson National Battlefield , west of Dover was the Battle of Fort Donelson during the American Civil War , from 12-16. Taken February 1862. The Union won an important victory there.
