Cumberland River |
The Cumberland River is an approximately 1,106 km long river in the United States .
It rises in eastern Kentucky not far from the border with Virginia in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains . Its source is located some northeast of the city of Cumberland . From there, the Cumberland River runs west through Kentucky and northern parts of Tennessee , reaches Kentucky again and flows into the Ohio River at the Illinois border at Smithland .
Roughly half of the river, which rushes over the Cumberland Falls and flows through three large reservoirs (including Cadiz Lake ), has been made navigable .
During the American Civil War , several battles were fought near the Cumberland River - including the Battle of Fort Donelson .
