Dickson County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Charlotte .

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Tennessee, is about 50 km to the north from Kentucky and has an area of 1,272 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Montgomery County , Cheatham County , Williamson County , Hickman County , Humphreys County, and Houston Counties .

history

Dickson County was formed on October 25, 1803 from parts of Montgomery County and Robertson County. It was named after William Dickson , a friend of President Jackson , a doctor, member of the US Congress , speaker of the House of Representatives from Tennessee and from 1806 to 1816 board member of the University of Nashville .

The Promise Land School is one of the county's 22 entries in the NRHP.

According to the 2000 census , Dickson County had 43,156 people in 16,473 households and 12,173 families. The population density was 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.25 percent white, 4.58 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.47 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.01 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.12 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 16,473 households, 35.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.5 percent were single mothers, and 26.1 percent were non-families. 22.3 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average household size was 3.02.

26.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.7 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 36 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 96.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.9 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,056 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,575. Males had a median income of $ 32,252 versus $ 23,686 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,043. 8.1 percent of families and 10.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
