Pickett County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Byrdstown .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Tennessee, borders Kentucky to the north and has an area of ​​452 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It is bordered, clockwise, by the following counties: Clinton County, Kentucky, Wayne County, Kentucky, Scott County , Fentress County , Overton County, and Clay County .

history

Pickett County was formed on February 27, 1879 from parts of Fentress County and Overton County. It was named after Howell L. Pickett , a Tennessee politician who was a member of the State Legislature .

Cordell Hull's birthplace in Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park is one of three entries for the county in the NRHP.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , Fort Loudoun . 18 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 26, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Pickett County had 4,945 people in 2,091 households and 1,461 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.15 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.44 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.83 percent of the population.

Of the 2,091 households, 27.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.3 percent were married couples living together, 7.8 percent were single mothers, and 30.1 percent were non-families. 27.2 percent were single households and 12.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.33 and the average household size was 2.83 people.

21.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44, 27.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.8 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.8 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 24,673 , and the median income for a family was $ 31,355. Males had a median income of $ 22,367 versus $ 17,173 for females.
