Wayne County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 19,923 people and a population density of 17 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Monticello . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located southeast of the geographic center, on the border with Tennessee and has an area of ​​1,254 square kilometers, of which 64 square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Russell County , Pulaski County, and Clinton County .

history

Wayne County was formed on December 18, 1800 from parts of Cumberland County and Pulaski County. It was named after General Anthony Wayne . During the Civil War , a battle between Union troops and Confederates took place around Mill Springs and in Pulaski County on January 19, 1862, which ended with a Union victory and around 670 dead.

The Mill Springs Battlefield has the status of a National Historic Landmark because of its special historical significance . A total of seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 23, 2017).

Wayne County had a population of 19,923 people as of the 2000 census . 184 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 7,913 households and 5,808 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer.
