Bourbon County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Paris , which was named after the French capital, as thanks for the help in the American Revolutionary War .

The county is located in northeast Kentucky and covers an area of ​​755 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Harrison County , Nicholas County , Bath County , Montgomery County , Clark County , Fayette County, and Scott County .

history

The original Bourbon County was formed on October 17, 1785 from parts of Fayette County, then the area was still part of Virginia . It was named after France's royal Bourbon family , as France had given the Americans important assistance in gaining independence from England. In 1792 it became part of the newly formed state of Kentucky. Bourbon County then was much larger than it is today; after repeated partitions as the population increased, areas of the original Bourbon County now belong to a total of 34 counties, including what is now Bourbon County.

According to the 2000 census , Bourbon County had 19,360 people. 199 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 7,681 households and 5,445 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.38 percent white, 6.94 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.36 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.02 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.60 percent of the population.

Of the 7,681 households, 32.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.7 percent were married couples living together, 12.3 percent were single mothers, 29.1 percent were non-families, 24.8 percent were single households, and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.95.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were statistically 91.0 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,038 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,294. Males had a median income of $ 30,989 versus $ 23,467 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,335. 12.3 percent of families and 14.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 19.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
