Knott County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Hindman , which was named after Lieutenant Governor James R. Hindman . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located almost in the far east of Kentucky, about 25 km to the southeast from Virginia and has an area of 914 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Magoffin County , Floyd County , Pike County , Letcher County , Perry County, and Breathitt Counties .
history
Knott County was formed on May 5, 1884 from parts of Breathitt County, Floyd County, Letcher County and Perry County. It was named after Governor J. Proctor Knott .
A total of five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 9, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Knott County had 17,649 people in 6,717 households and 4,990 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.27 percent white, 0.73 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.63 percent of the population.
Of the 6,717 households, 34.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 12.6 percent were single mothers, 25.7 percent were non-families, 23.6 percent were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 10.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older there were statistically 94.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 20,373 , and the median income for a family is $ 24,930. Males had a median income of $ 29,471 versus $ 21,240 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,297. 26.2 percent of families and 31.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 39.8 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 23.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
