James Proctor Knott (born August 29, 1830 in Marion County , Kentucky , † June 18, 1911 in Lebanon , Kentucky) was an American politician and governor of Kentucky. He also represented this state in Congress .

Early years

Knott was initially taught by his father, only later did he attend the local schools. This was followed by a successful law degree. In 1850 he moved to Memphis , Missouri , where he worked as a lawyer from 1851. Between 1857 and 1859 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Missouri and from 1859 to 1862 Attorney General of the state. As a supporter of the Union, he stayed in the capital, Jefferson City , while the rest of the government fled. He held office for a while, but fell out with the radical Republicans and returned to Kentucky in 1863.

Political career

In 1867, Knott was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington . He held this mandate until 1871. Between 1875 and 1883 he spent more years on this body. For the gubernatorial elections of 1883 in Kentucky he was put up by the Democratic Party as their candidate. He won the election with 60% of the vote against Thomas Z. Morrow. His tenure began on September 5, 1883 and ended on August 30, 1887. During this time, a school for training black teachers was founded. A committee was set up to set the same standards for teachers across the country. The governor also managed to further contain violence in Kentucky. The successful Southern Exposition exhibition also took place in Louisville during his tenure .

Old age and death

After his tenure ended, he turned down President Grover Cleveland's offer to become the first governor of the Territory of Hawaii . From 1887 to 1888 he was Assistant Attorney General of Kentucky. In 1891 he was a delegate to the Convention to Reform the Kentucky Constitution. His last public office was the post of Dean of Center College Law School (1894-1901).
