William Johnson Stone

William Johnson Stone (born June 26, 1841 in Kuttawa , Lyon County , Kentucky , †  March 12, 1923 in Frankfort , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1895 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Stone attended the public schools in his home country and the QM Tyler's Collegiate Institute in Cadiz . He then studied law. During the Civil War he was a captain in the Confederation Army ; after that he worked in agriculture. He also began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1867, 1875 and 1883 Stone sat as a member of the House of Representatives from Kentucky , where he was its speaker in 1875 . In the congressional elections of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Oscar Turner on March 4, 1885 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . Between 1887 and 1889 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with war compensation.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Stone worked in commerce in his native Kuttawa. In 1912 he was appointed retirement pensioner for former Confederates. He held this office until his death on March 12, 1923.
