The chapel of the Holy Sorrows in Obergammenried

Hl. Kümmernis is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Upper Swabian Obergammenried , a district of Bad Wörishofen . Patroness of the chapel is the fictional Saint Wilgefortis (Sorrow) .

history

The chapel was built in 1645 as a wooden votive chapel . In 1769 the "upper farmer" Martin Singer built a new building in his garden. Today's chapel is probably just a renovation and was consecrated on May 26, 1886 by the Swabian water doctor and pastor Sebastian Kneipp .

architecture

The chapel is a semicircular closed building with two small arched windows on both sides and a mirrored ceiling, the volute of which is enclosed by profiles. In the west, a narrow anteroom was subsequently separated off. From this a rectangular door leads into the chapel . To the south there is an arched door that leads to the outside and at the north end of the vestibule there is a barrel-vaulted altar niche. The outside has a profiled eaves cornice. Above the west gable is a simple, square-shaped roof turret, a base, gables and a tin-covered top.

Furnishing

The ceiling painting is labeled " Hans Gutschwager 1937". It is a representation of the history of the chapel's origins with a banner: “In 1645 enemy mercenaries attacked Obergammenried. The farmer Lenz was tied to the tail of a horse that was chasing away. In his need, however, he implored the intercession of St. Grief. To praise and praise God, he built this chapel for his wonderful salvation ”.

Altar of the chapel

The altar made of gray, green and red marbled wood with gold decoration and a box of stipes was probably made around 1769. The small tabernacle is bordered by volutes. The structure is flat and concave and divided into three axes by volute templates. A closed, arched painting in the center with the holy sorrow on the cross was created around 1886. A violinist in front of it receives one of her shoes. The extension is flanked by volutes with putti.

The altar canteen in the niche of the vestibule from the second half of the 18th century is made of marbled wood. On the antependium there is the Jesus monogram in a curved field and on the wall above a peasant crucifix from the same period . The stalls are neo-Gothic. Two votive pictures on wood with a curved finish date from the second half of the 18th century and show a four-column altar with the holy sorrow. In one picture in front of it a man kneels with a horse, in a second a woman with a cow.
