North Cemetery (Magdeburg)
The north cemetery is a former municipal cemetery in Magdeburg , the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt .
location
Today the Nordpark Magdeburg is located on the site of the former north cemetery . The park is located north of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in the Magdeburg-Alte Neustadt district .
history
Magdeburg's mayor August Wilhelm Francke began to reform Magdeburg's cemetery system in 1823. For this purpose, the city bought part of the area north of the old town, which had been leveled by Napoleon. The design of the system was done by Peter Joseph Lenné .
The cemetery was consecrated on March 21, 1827. Until 1850, the funerals took place in a rather simple form in rows. Thereafter, hereditary burials and thus more complex graves were also permitted. The north cemetery was closed in 1898 after the construction of the south cemetery (Magdeburg) and the west cemetery (Magdeburg) . After that, burials were only allowed in graves that had already been acquired.
Around 1900 the facility was converted into a park. To this end, a number of graves were leveled and the tombstones removed.
The park was badly damaged during World War II. Around 200 bombs destroyed the remaining facilities.
