Laban T. Moore

Laban Theodore Moore (born January 13, 1829 in Wayne County , Virginia , †  November 9, 1892 in Catlettsburg , Kentucky ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1861 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Laban Moore was born in Wayne County in what is now West Virginia on the Kentucky border in 1829 . The town of Louisa, which also belongs to Kentucky, is very close by . Moore attended Marshall Academy in Virginia and Marietta College in Ohio . After a subsequent law degree at Transylvania Law College and his admission as a lawyer in 1849, he began to work in Louisa in this profession.

Politically, Moore initially joined the short-lived Opposition Party . In 1857 he ran unsuccessfully for the Kentucky House of Representatives . In the congressional election of 1858 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded John Calvin Mason on March 4, 1859 . Since he refused to run again in 1860, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1861 . This was shaped by the events and discussions in the immediate run-up to the civil war . This also included the departure of congressmen from the states that left the Union at the time.

During the Civil War Laban Moore set up the 14th Kentucky Volunteer Regiment, of which he became a colonel. This unit fought on the side of the Union. Moore gave up military service on January 1, 1862. He moved to Catlettsburg, where he practiced as a lawyer. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party during this time . In 1881 he was elected to the Kentucky Senate. In 1890 and 1891 he was a member of a delegation to revise the Kentucky state constitution. Laban Moore died on November 9, 1892 in Catlettsburg and was buried in Ashland .
