Robert Mallory (born November 15, 1815 in Madison , Virginia , †  August 11, 1885 in La Grange , Kentucky ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1865 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Mallory initially enjoyed a private school education. He then studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . In the following years he worked in La Grange in agriculture. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1837, he began working in this profession in New Castle . In the late 1850s he became a member of the short-lived Opposition Party .

In the 1858 congressional election , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Kentucky . where he succeeded Humphrey Marshall on March 4, 1859 . After re-election in 1860, he was able to represent his district in Congress until March 3, 1863 . In the elections of 1862 he ran successfully as a Unionist in the fifth constituency. On March 4, 1863, he succeeded Charles A. Wickliffe in Congress , who had previously represented this district in the US House of Representatives. Robert Mallory served a total of three terms in Congress between 1859 and 1865. These were initially shaped by the tensions before the civil war and then by the events of the war itself. From 1859 to 1863 he chaired the Committee on Roads and Canals .

In the elections of 1864 he was not confirmed. In August 1866, Mallory was a delegate to the National Union Convention in Philadelphia . In 1876 he served as one of the vice presidents of the Centennial Exhibition , the World's Fair in Philadelphia. In between and afterwards he worked in agriculture. He ran his Spring Hill farm, which originally belonged to the Taylor family related to him, including President Zachary Taylor . Robert Mallory died on August 11, 1885 and was buried in the family cemetery on Spring Hill.
