Samuel Oldham Peyton (born January 8, 1804 in Bullitt County , Kentucky , †  January 4, 1870 in Hartford , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1861 he twice represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Samuel Peyton studied medicine at Transylvania University in Lexington . After his approval as a doctor, he began to work in Hartford in 1827 in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1835 he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives.

In the congressional election of 1846 , Peyton was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Henry Grider on March 4, 1847 . Since he lost to Finis McLean of the Whig Party in 1848 , he was initially only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1849 . During this time the Mexican-American War ended . In 1856 , Peyton was re-elected to Congress in the second district of Kentucky. There he replaced John P. Campbell on March 4, 1857 . After being re-elected in 1858, he was able to spend two more legislative terms in the House of Representatives until March 3, 1861. These were shaped by the events leading up to the imminent civil war .

In 1860, Samuel Peyton was no longer nominated by his party for another term. In the following years up to his death on January 4, 1870, Samuel Peyton practiced again as a doctor in Hartford.
