Larry Jones Hopkins (born October 25, 1933 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 1993 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Larry Hopkins attended public schools in Wingo, Kentucky. Between 1951 and 1954 he studied at Murray State University . He then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1956 . He later worked as a stockbroker for Hilliard & Lyons, Inc. In 1969, Hopkins became an administrative clerk in Fayette County . He joined the Republican Party . From 1972 to 1976 he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives ; between 1976 and 1978 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1978 congressional election , Hopkins was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded John B. Breckinridge on January 3, 1979 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . In 1991 Hopkins applied for the governor of Kentucky without success . In the 1992 congressional elections, he decided not to run again. He later worked as a department head in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

Larry Hopkins now lives in Lexington . His son is the actor Josh Hopkins .
