- founding
On September 22, 1922, the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky selected the small town of Murray as the new university location. Since 1926 the university has been authorized to award Bachelor degrees. After several name changes in 1926, 1930 and 1948, the current name Murray State University was chosen. Murray State University is the only public school in Kentucky listed in the US News & World Report as one of the top twenty schools in the South since 1990.

Traditions
- The "Shoe Tree"
A campus tradition at Murray State University is the “Shoe Tree,” which is located on a central green space (the “Quad”) on campus. Married couples who met during their studies return to this tree and nail a shoe to the tree as a sign of their marriage. Often the name and date are also noted on the shoes. Due to the large number of nails, the shoe tree is prone to lightning strikes. The current tree is the second shoe tree after the first burned down after a lightning strike. In order to keep the risk of a potentially large-scale fire low, the treetop of the new tree was cut off.
