Temetrius Jamel "Ja" Morant (born August 10, 1999 in Dalzell , South Carolina ) is an American basketball player who has been under contract with the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA since 2019 .

Childhood and high school

Yes Morant's father played with Ray Allen in high school but never made it into the National Basketball Association (NBA). When Ja was born, he ended his career and took a job as a hairdresser. Ja trained a lot with his father in his childhood and often played against older opponents who were physically superior to him. He himself names the point guards Rajon Rondo and Russell Westbrook as his role models. Morant played for the AAU team of the South Carolina Hornets , in which he played one season with the super talent Zion Williamson .

He then attended Crestwood High School in Sumter , South Carolina, and left it with the most points a player had ever scored for high school. In his last two years playing for Crestwood, he averaged 27 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists per encounter. During this time, he was recognized three times as the regional Most Valuable Player .

college

Morant's accomplishments went unnoticed by most colleges, with the only request from a major NCAA Division I team coming from the University of South Carolina . Ultimately, he convinced the assistant trainer of the Racers at Murray State University during a trial session . When he wanted to get something to eat, he noticed Morant playing a 3-on-3 game . Head coach Matt McMahon soon offered him a scholarship, and after a meal, Morant decided to play for Murray State in the future.

As a freshman for the Racers , he was in the starting line-up in all games and averaged 13 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists per game. He achieved his first triple-double on November 13, 2017, when he scored 11 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists in the win against Eastern Illinois . At the end of the season he was awarded a call-up to the 1st All-OVC and OVC All-Newcomer Team . As a sophomore he was given the leadership role after high performers left. In his first game of the season he scored 26 points and also prepared eleven basket successes from teammates in the 74: 53 win against Wright State . In a game against SIU Edwardsville he made 40 points, 11 assists and 5 steals and was the first NCAA Division I player in 20 years to have such a statistic. At the end of the regular season, he was named the MVP of the Ohio Valley Conference and led Division I in assists. With the Racers failed in the second round of the West Regional Playoffs with 62:90 at Florida State . Morant closed his sophomore season with 24.5 points; 8.7 rebounds; 10 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

NBA

After Murray State left, Ja Morant decided to sign up for the upcoming 2019 NBA draft . Many experts identified him as a candidate for one of the top five places during the season. That expectation was confirmed when he was  selected second by the Memphis Grizzlies in June 2019 . On June 2, 2019, he signed a two-year contract, the nearly 17.9 million him at this time the US dollar will bring. On October 23, 2019, he made his debut in the 101: 120 loss to the Miami Heat in the NBA and collected 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in this game. Until the return of Zion Williamson , who was voted first in the draft but did not make his debut until the end of January 2020, Morant was considered by far the best rookie in the league. Up to this point he led the rookie statistics in points and assists and was also named Rookie of the Month at the Western Conference three times from November to January 2020 . On February 9, 2020, he marked a trible double for the first time in the 106:99 victory against the Washington Wizards .
