Burwell Clark Ritter (born January 6, 1810 in Russellville , Barren County , Kentucky , †  October 1, 1880 in Hopkinsville , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Burwell Ritter enjoyed only a limited education. He later became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1842 and 1850 he was an MP in the Kentucky House of Representatives . In the congressional elections of 1864 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded George Helm Yeaman on March 4, 1865 . Since he refused to run again in 1866, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1867 . During this time the civil war ended . In addition, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was passed, prohibiting slavery . Since 1865, the work of Congress has been overshadowed by tension between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Burwell Ritter worked in agriculture. He died on October 1, 1880 in Hopkinsville, where he was also buried. His nephew Walter Evans (1842-1923) represented the state of Kentucky between 1895 and 1899 in Congress.
