Leander Martin Cox (born May 7, 1812 in Cumberland County , Virginia , †  March 19, 1865 in Flemingsburg , Kentucky ) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1857 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Leander Cox enjoyed an academic education. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He later moved to Flemingsburg, Kentucky. Politically, he became a member of the Whig Party . Between 1843 and 1845 he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives . During the Mexican-American War he was captain of a volunteer unit from Kentucky.

In the congressional election of 1852 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded John Calvin Mason on March 4, 1853 . After a re-election in 1854 as a candidate for the American Party , he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1857 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . In the elections of 1856, Cox was defeated by his predecessor Mason, who also became his successor in Congress. After leaving the US House of Representatives, Leander Cox returned to practice as a lawyer. He died on March 19, 1865 in Flemingsburg.
