Thomas R. Underwood

Thomas Rust Underwood (* 3. March 1898 in Hopkinsville , Christian County , Kentucky ; †  29. June 1956 in Lexington , Kentucky) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was a member of both houses of Congress as a representative of the state of Kentucky.

Before embarking on a political career, Underwood worked as a journalist at the daily newspaper Lexington Herald ; At times he was also employed in the state administration of Kentucky and on the racecourse.

From January 3, 1949, Thomas Underwood was a member of the United States House of Representatives for the Democrats . After two years he was confirmed in office; however, he gave up his mandate quickly afterwards when he was appointed US Senator for Kentucky on March 19, 1951 as the successor to the late Virgil Chapman . He ran to end his tenure, which lasted until January 3, 1955, but had to stand for a by-election the following year and was subject to the Republican John Sherman Cooper . So he left the Congress on November 4, 1952.

After serving in the Senate, he returned to Lexington and worked for the local newspaper until his death in 1956.
