John Sherman Cooper

John Sherman Cooper (* 23. August 1901 in Somerset , Pulaski County , Kentucky , † 21st February 1991 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician of the Republican Party .

Life

Cooper studied at Yale University , where he was accepted into the Skull & Bones fraternity. After graduating there in 1923, Cooper attended Harvard Law School from 1923 to 1925 . He was admitted to the bar in 1928 and practiced in his hometown. After serving as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1928 to 1930 , he served as a judge in Pulaski County between 1930 and 1938. During World War II , he served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 . Cooper had the rank of captain there .

In November 1946, he was elected to the Senate for the Republicans to fill the vacant seat of the resigned Happy Chandler . Cooper was a Senator from November 6, 1946 to January 3, 1949. After he lost Virgil Chapman in the 1948 elections, he practiced law again. In 1952 he was re-elected to the Senate, this time to fill the vacant seat of the late Chapman, remained a Senator from November 5, 1952 to January 3, 1955, and lost again in 1954. From 1955 to 1956, Cooper was the successor to George V. Allen as US ambassador to India and Nepal .

In 1956 he was elected a third time to the Senate to fill a vacant seat, this time that of the late Albert W. Barkley . In 1960 and 1966 he was re-elected, representing Kentucky from November 7, 1956 to January 3, 1973 in the United States Senate. In his capacity as Senator, Cooper served on the Warren Commission . In the 1972 election he decided not to run again. After working as ambassador to the GDR from 1974 to 1976, he practiced as a lawyer in Washington.

Cooper died in Washington DC at the age of 89 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. In Fountain Square in Somerset, a statue was erected in his honor and the power plant John Sherman Cooper Power Plant , which supplies the surrounding counties with energy, named after him.
