William A. Stanfill
William Abner Stanfill (born January 16, 1892 in Barbourville , Kentucky , † June 12, 1971 in Lexington , Kentucky) was an American lawyer and politician of the Republican Party , who represented the state of Kentucky in the US Senate .
After attending Union College , Stanfill graduated from the University of Kentucky with a law degree in 1912 . He was inducted into the bar and began practicing in his hometown of Barbourville before moving to Hazard in 1916 . From 1927 to 1931 he was a member of the board of regents at Morehead State Teachers College , later Morehead State University .
After the Democratic US Senator Happy Chandler resigned on November 1, 1945 to become commissioner of Major League Baseball , William Stanfill was appointed by Kentucky's Republican Governor Simeon Willis as his successor in Congress . He accepted the vacant seat on November 19, 1945 and remained in the Senate until November 5 of the following year; in the upcoming by-election, he did not apply for the mandate, which then went to Republican John Sherman Cooper .
Stanfill then went back to work as a lawyer before retiring in Lexington, where he died in 1971.
