Frederic M. Sackett
Frederic Mosley Sackett (born December 17, 1868 in Providence , Rhode Island , † May 18, 1941 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and diplomat .
Life
Sackett, whose father ran a wool factory, started studying law after attending school . He graduated from Brown University in 1890 and Harvard in 1893 . After joining the bar that same year, he began practicing in Columbus . Shortly thereafter, he moved to Cincinnati , and later to Louisville , Kentucky . He worked as a lawyer until 1907.
In 1898, Sackett and Olive Speed married, who came from a well-known Kentucky family. This had achieved prosperity through trading in coal and cement . Over time, Sackett was also introduced to the business world this way. Between 1907 and 1912 he was president of the Louisville Gas Company and the Louisville Lighting Company . He presided over the Louisville Chamber of Commerce in 1917, 1922 and 1923. From 1917 to 1924 he headed the local branch of the Federal Reserve Bank .
Public offices
During the First World War , Frederic Sackett served as federal commissioner for the food supply in the state of Kentucky. He made friends with the future US President Herbert Hoover , who was then the National Food Commissioner. From 1919 to 1924 he was a member of Kentucky's State Welfare Agency.
In 1924 he was elected for the Republican Party to represent Kentucky in the US Senate . His term began on March 4, 1925. He resigned on January 9, 1930 after President Hoover appointed him Ambassador of the United States to Germany . After three years of service in Berlin, he resigned this post in 1933 and resumed his business activities as a private individual.
During a visit to Baltimore, he died of complications from a heart attack. He was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.
