Barbourville is a city in Knox County in the US state of Kentucky . According to the population census of 2000 , the city had 3589 inhabitants, which is a slight decrease compared to the last census of 1990 (3658). The town is also the county seat of Knox County.
geography
The city is located in the coalfield area north of a loop of the meandering Cumberland River in the southeast of the state. The city extends over an area of 9.0 km² .
history
The place was formed around 1800, when a certain James Barbour secured the local land rights. The area was already explored around 1750 by Thomas Walker and Richard Ballinger. A tavern was opened here around 1795 in order to earn money from the traffic on the Wilderness Road . A real post office opened in 1804. During the Civil War was the outskirts of the city on 17 and 18 September 1861 the scene of a minor battle between two companies of the northern states and about 800 men of the Confederacy , in which about 20 soldiers died.
