Ben Johnson

Ben Johnson (born May 20, 1858 in Bardstown , Nelson County , Kentucky , †  June 4, 1950 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1907 and 1927 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ben Johnson attended St. Mary's College until 1878 . After a subsequent law degree at Louisville Law University and his 1882 admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Bardstown in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1885 and 1887 he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives , of which he was president in 1887. From 1893 to 1897, Johnson was head of the Kentucky Fifth Tax District Treasury. In 1905 and 1906 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1906 congressional election , Johnson was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded David Highbaugh Smith on March 4, 1907 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1927 . Between 1911 and 1919 he chaired the District of Columbia Administration Committee. World War I fell during his time in Congress . In addition, the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified between 1913 and 1920 . In 1912 and 1920 Johnson took part as a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In 1926, Johnson decided not to run for the US House of Representatives again. In the following years he practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Bardstown on June 4, 1950 at the age of 92.
