Carl D. Perkins

Carl Dewey Perkins (born October 15, 1912 in Hindman , Knott County , Kentucky , †  August 3, 1984 in Lexington , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1984 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Carl Perkins attended Knott County's public schools, Hindman High School, and two other colleges in Kentucky. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Louisville and his admission to the bar in 1935, he began to work in Hindman in this profession. He then became a district attorney in the 31st Judicial District of Kentucky. In 1941 he became a district attorney in Knott County. During the Second World War he was used as a soldier in the US Army in the European theater of war.

Politically, Perkins was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1940 he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives . After the war, he remained a Knott County attorney until January 1, 1948. He then became an advisor to the Kentucky Highway Commission . In the 1948 congressional election , Perkins was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Republican Wendell H. Meade on January 3, 1949 . After 17 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on August 3, 1984 . From 1967 until his death he was chairman of the education and working committee there . During his 35 years in the US House of Representatives, the Korean War , the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair took place . After his death, his son Carl, born in 1954, was elected as his successor in Congress.
