John McKenzie Moss (born January 3, 1868 in Bennettstown , Christian County , Kentucky , † June 11, 1929 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1902 and 1903 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives ; later he became a federal judge .
Career
J. McKenzie Moss was a nephew of James A. McKenzie (1840-1904), who also represented the state of Kentucky in Congress between 1877 and 1883 and was then US ambassador to Peru . Moss attended both public and private schools. Between 1888 and 1891 he worked for the railroad's postal service. After studying law at Kent Law School in Chicago and being admitted to the bar in 1893, he began working in this profession in Bowling Green.
Politically, Moss was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1900 congressional elections , he ran in the third constituency of Kentucky for the US House of Representatives in Washington. He initially lost to the Democratic incumbent John Stockdale Rhea . But Moss appealed against the outcome of the election. After this was granted, he took over the mandate from Rhea on March 25, 1902. By March 3, 1903, he was able to end the current legislative period in Congress.
In the elections of 1902 he was defeated by Rhea, who thus regained his old mandate. In the following years Moss worked again as a lawyer. Between 1909 and 1921 he was a judge in the eighth judicial district of Kentucky. From 1921 to 1923 he held various positions in the federal government; while he was between 1923 and 1926 he was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Treasury . Moss then served as a federal judge at the United States Court of Claims until his death in 1929 , succeeding George Eddy Downey .
