Hugh F. Finley
Hugh Franklin Finley (born January 18, 1833 in Tyes Ferry , Whitley County , Kentucky , † October 16, 1909 in Williamsburg , Kentucky) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Hugh Finley attended public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1859, he began to work in this profession in Williamsburg. Between 1862 and 1866 and again from 1867 to 1874 he was a state attorney in Kentucky. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1861 and 1862 . In 1870 he ran for the first time, but unsuccessfully, for the Congress . He was a member of the Kentucky Senate from 1875 to 1876 . He was then until 1877 as the successor to Gabriel C. Wharton federal attorney for Kentucky. For the next three years to 1880, Finley practiced as a private lawyer. He was then from 1880 to 1886 judge in the 15th judicial district of his state.
In the 1886 congressional election , Finley was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Frank Lane Wolford on March 4, 1887 . After a re-election in 1888, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1891. He was no longer nominated by his party for the elections in 1890.
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Finley returned to work as a lawyer. He was also involved in coal mining. Hugh Finley died in Williamsburg on October 16, 1909. His son Charles also represented Kentucky in Congress between 1930 and 1933.
