William Brown (politician, 1779)

William Brown (born April 19, 1779 in Frederick County , Virginia , †  October 6, 1833 in Jacksonville , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Brown attended public schools in his native Virginia. In 1784 he came with his father to Bourbon County in what was later to be Kentucky. In about 1795 the family moved to Cynthiana , Harrison County . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. In the British-American War of 1812 , Brown was a colonel in the US Army .

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Before serving as a congressman, he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives . In the congressional election of 1818 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Richard Mentor Johnson on March 4, 1819 . By March 3, 1821, Brown served a term in Congress . After his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew from politics. In 1832 Brown moved to Jacksonville, Illinois, where he died on October 6, 1833.
