Kenneth Ray "Ken" Lucas (born August 22, 1933 in Covington , Kenton County , Kentucky ) is an American politician . Between 1999 and 2005 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ken Lucas grew up on a farm in Grant County . Until 1955 he studied at the University of Kentucky in Lexington . He was then an officer in the United States Air Force between 1955 and 1967 . Later he was a member of the National Guard Air Corps. By the end of his military service, he had achieved the rank of major. Politically, Lucas joined the Democratic Party . Between 1967 and 1974 he was a councilor in Florence . He was then employed by the Boone County Administration from 1974 to 1982 . From 1992 to 1998 he worked there at the district court.

In the 1998 congressional election , Lucas was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Republican Jim Bunning on January 3, 1999 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2005 . There he was considered one of the most conservative Democratic MPs. He was repeatedly offered to join the Republican Party, which he refused.

In 2004, Lucas decided not to run again. In 2006, his attempt to return to Congress failed. In February 2009, he became Commissioner in charge of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs .
