Romano L. Mazzoli

Romano Louis Mazzoli (born November 2, 1932 in Louisville , Kentucky ) is an American politician . Between 1971 and 1995 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Romano Mazzoli initially enjoyed a private school education in his hometown of Louisville. He then studied until 1954 at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend ( Indiana ). Between 1954 and 1956 he served as a soldier in the United States Army . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Louisville and his admission as a lawyer in 1960, he began to work in Louisville in this profession. Between 1963 and 1967 he lectured on business law at Bellamine College .

Politically, Mazzoli joined the Democratic Party . Between 1968 and 1970 he was a member of the Kentucky Senate . In the 1970 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of his state , where he succeeded Republican William O. Cowger on January 3, 1971 . After eleven re-elections, he was able to complete twelve consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 . There he was with Senator Alan K. Simpson of Wyoming , the driving force behind the reform of immigration laws, as in 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act of became known. In 1986, Mazzoli was involved in the impeachment proceedings against Federal Judge Harry E. Claiborne .

During his time in the US House of Representatives, the Vietnam War ended . In 1974 the Watergate Affair overshadowed political life in the United States. In 1971 and 1992, the 26th and 27th amendments were ratified. In 1994 Mazzoli declined to run again. After his time in Congress, he taught law at various universities. In 2002 he served on the political faculty of Harvard University , the Harvard Kennedy School . In 2006 he co -authored an article in the Washington Post dealing with the modern day naturalization law he co-authored in 1986.
