Harry Eugene Claiborne (born July 2, 1917 in McRae , Arkansas , † January 19, 2004 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American lawyer . After his appointment by President Jimmy Carter , he served as a federal judge in the federal district court for the District of Nevada from 1978 until his impeachment in 1986 . He was the fifth person to be removed from office by the United States Congress and the first federal judge to serve a prison sentence.

During World War II , Claiborne served domestically as a sergeant in the US Army Military Police. He then worked as a lawyer in Las Vegas. In the run-up to the 1964 election , he ran for a seat in the US Senate , but lost in the Democratic Primary to incumbent Howard Cannon .

On July 25, 1978, Claiborne was appointed by President Carter to succeed Bruce Rutherford Thompson as a judge on the United States District Court for the District of Nevada . After confirmation by the US Senate, which took place on August 11 of the same year, he was able to take office immediately. From 1980 he stood before this federal court as Chief Judge . In 1986 he was convicted of a tax offense and was removed from office by Congress during his 17 months in prison. His seat fell to Philip Martin Pro . After his release, he was allowed to practice again as a lawyer in Nevada.

Harry Claiborne was married four times and died of suicide after developing cancer .
