John W. Caldwell

John William Caldwell (born January 15, 1837 in Russellville , Logan County , Kentucky , †  July 4, 1903 there ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1883 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Caldwell attended his home public schools and then Bethel College . In 1850 he moved to Texas with his uncle , where he worked on a farm. He also worked there as a land surveyor, among other things. After a few years he returned to Kentucky. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in his new profession. During the Civil War , Caldwell rose to the rank of colonel in the Confederation Army . After the war, he continued his legal practice in Russellville in 1865. He was then a district judge in Logan County.

Caldwell was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1876 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Charles W. Milliken on March 4, 1877 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . For the elections of 1882, Caldwell declined to run again. In the following years he was President of Logan County Bank . He died in Russellville on July 4, 1903.
