The court dealt with claims against the US government . Founded after the end of the Mexican.American War , when veterans of the war made claims against the federal government, the court was established in Washington, DC in May 1855 to settle such claims . Prior to the creation of the court, Congress was responsible for handling claims against the federal government, but the number of cases increased so that Congress ordered the establishment of a special court to deal with claims arising from legal transactions with the federal government. The United States Court of Federal Claims was established in 1982 as the successor to this task . One of the best-known cases the court dealt with is the United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians .
